Credit card: pros and cons, reviews from owners. Advantages and disadvantages of credit cards All about the advantages of credit cards

20.06.2023

Now let's talk about the advantages of credit cards, and what is their disadvantage.

So, benefits of credit cards:

1. This is not a cache. You carry any amount with you and no robber can take anything away from you. Even if the card disappears, you just call the bank (the main thing is as quickly as possible) and ask to block it, then they restore your credit card and you use it again, the same funds are in your account.

2. Convenience of payment for goods, services and services. Now almost every company accepts credit cards for payment. And if we are talking about grocery purchases or purchases in shopping centers, then swiping a credit card once and entering a PIN code is much more convenient than conducting mutual settlements at each checkout, counting out bills, counting change, etc. Perhaps this is one of the main advantages of credit cards over cash.

3. Cash back. Some banks, together with sellers (companies that accept credit cards), are developing joint programs under which non-cash payment of their products the client receives a discount, i.e. return of a certain percentage of the purchase to your card account. Usually such a discount is small, but if we are talking about periodic expensive purchases from such partners, then these 1% -5% are not at all superfluous.

4. Interest-free loan period. I have already mentioned what an interest-free lending period is. In short: if you use credit funds on a card via non-cash payment, then if you withdraw funds before the expiration of this period, you will not be charged interest. A kind of “free” period of use credit funds.

5. Some combined or debit cards when holding them own funds They also represent a system of accumulation. Those. a kind of perpetual deposit at interest. Every month you are pleased to see how your account has replenished a little. Due to the fact that the cardholder can withdraw funds at any time, the bank makes the rate of this “deposit” small relative to market interest on deposits, but this is still some kind of increase.

6. Payment online. Nowadays, the trade space is moving at a rapid pace, including to the Internet. And sometimes only there you can buy something that cannot be purchased offline in your city. For example, order something on international sites like e-bay or buy an air ticket on special offer sites, etc.

Electronic money such as Webmoney or Yandex Money are accepted only in the CIS, but you can pay with a card online anywhere in the world. This is a fairly significant advantage of credit cards in the online space.

7. Co-branding programs. Nowadays, special co-branded credit cards are increasingly common, which the bank issues with the participation of a major partner. A partner could be, for example, an airline that, for using this card, awards its holder points, which in the future provide significant discounts on air travel on their tickets. This is a significant advantage for frequent fliers.

8. Chips for elite cards. Card holders Gold type, Platinum, etc. have the right to various privileges that the bank creates for them: from insurance when traveling abroad to a universal service for any everyday issues (for example, Russian Standard VIP cards).

Now let's look at it disadvantages of credit cards:

1. The main disadvantage of credit cards is, of course, the risk of fraud. Yes, sometimes credit cards are hacked and funds are stolen.

Remember, the most vulnerable link when handling a credit card is entering your PIN code. And “card theft” most often occurs when fraudsters “cheat” with an ATM to remove PIN codes and other data. So when it comes to cashing out, try to use proven machines, preferably in bank buildings.

2. Restriction on withdrawals. If you suddenly want to get cash on a card and come to a cash machine, then it probably has a withdrawal limit, because the funds there are limited and should be enough for all average cash requests from clients coming to it over these few days.

Of course, you will receive a small amount. But, for example, getting even 20,000 rubles from some ATMs will be problematic. At all, large amounts you have to order from the bank in advance and receive them at the bank’s cash desk.

3. Sometimes it's difficult to recover a credit card. These delays with the bank will be especially costly if you are abroad and the loss/theft/attempted hacking of your credit card occurred there. The fact is that some banks require the card holder to visit you to restore the card and/or you need to do a whole series of recovery procedures.

Thus, if there is a question about using a credit card, be sure to keep in mind these advantages and disadvantages of credit cards. And never keep a lot of funds on the card, because... The development of card fraud is progressing every day.

A credit card is a tempting offer or a loan for no favorable conditions? What are the advantages of this type of lending? Card owners can talk about the advantages and disadvantages of using them, so that each person, even before concluding a contract with the bank, can decide how convenient a loan will be, what the pros and cons of credit cards are, whether it is worth applying for them or whether it is better to give preference to another type of loan.

To understand how good credit cards are and whether there are any disadvantages in using them, it is worth turning to the reviews of people who have already used this card banking product.

Owners note the following advantages:

  1. You can use the loan several times, you spend the funds, then top up your account and can use the money again;
  2. The cards have a grace period during which you do not pay any interest on the use of funds. This opportunity is especially convenient for people who decide to make a purchase when there is very little time left before payday. Often this period is renewable;
  3. If you use the card for a long time, your limit may be increased;
  4. It’s convenient to pay for purchases with a card; no fees are charged;
  5. Unlike a cash loan, you do not have to withdraw the entire amount at once, but do it in parts, and you will only have to pay interest for the time you use the money. This is convenient when you plan to make more than one large purchase, but simply pay with a card in stores.

But the banking product has your shortcomings, which are noted in owner reviews:

  • High interest rates compared to a regular consumer loan;
  • A credit card is not suitable for withdrawing cash - the commission is several percent;
  • In addition to interest, you will have to pay additional funds - for maintenance, insurance, mobile bank, all this increases total cost loan;
  • If a person does not know how to manage his finances rationally, he will constantly withdraw money from the card, as a result, the debt will never decrease, and you will constantly pay interest to the bank.

The limit here is 600 thousand, the rate is up to 33.9%, you can connect automatic payments and use the card abroad under standard conditions.

The procedure takes several weeks, so you won’t be able to get money quickly. The card limit is kept secret until the contract is signed. The bank is ready to issue up to 300 thousand, but in practice clients most often receive small amounts: 20, 30 or 50 thousand. Video: how to choose and how to use credit cards

A credit card in the pocket of the modern average person is no longer perceived by many as just an everyday occurrence, but a vital necessity. Is this so? To find out, you need to clearly see all the pros and cons of the card lending system. The pros and cons of credit cards from Sberbank, Gazprombank, VTB 24 and other banks in general are not much different from each other. Moreover, we are now talking about Russia, where lending has still not become the engine of either macroeconomics or microeconomics. It is important to understand that Russian loan is essentially consumer, not investment (as has historically happened in Western Europe and the USA). It actually does not produce anything economically, but simply makes life a little easier for borrowers for a while.

Credit cards have pros and cons, but they are not capital intensive. This is not an advantage or disadvantage - it is a property. Clients who have not previously dealt with banking sector , are trying to get reliable information about a card loan from other users. Reviews from holders of such card products vary in diametrically opposite poles. The mistake clients make is that they try to understand whether it is worth getting a credit card or not, based on these reviews. In this case, it is worth looking at the opinions of other clients when purchasing a card product at a particular establishment. And then with caution. But to decide whether “plastic” with a credit limit on it is needed at all, you can only understand credit bank card. And the essence is simple - the same consumer loan, only in the form of a paid spare wallet, which you can always keep with you and resort to as needed.

Advantages of credit “plastic”

It's worth starting with the good:

  1. The constant presence of some “emergency” finances. A kind of “joker in the hole” against the force majeure circumstances of unpredictable Russian reality. Actually, this is why reasonable people get a credit card. To buy those things and services that turn out to be very necessary, urgently, without the opportunity to wait six months and accumulate enough of their own earned funds.
  2. Many firms, networks and companies support various systems discounts, promotions and bonuses. These are shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, online markets, travel agencies, airlines. A credit card Sberbank, and almost every bank, allows you to take advantage of these benefits. That is, special promotions are launched, participation in which is available only to credit card holders. For example, when making purchases on the Internet and paying with a credit card, the owner accumulates bonus points. These points can then be used to fully or partially pay for any purchase. Or a promotion is opened in which, if payment is made with one or another credit card, there is some kind of discount (sometimes quite substantial - up to 50%). It all depends on how large the bank where the card was issued is. And does this bank have many partnership agreements with other organizations? But one way or another, the discounts available to credit card holders to some extent compensate for overpayments on the loan.
  3. If a “plastic” with a credit limit is serviced VISA system or MasterCard and has Classic status (for example, VISA Classic), and this is usually what happens in the credit card sector, then the client ends up with a universal payment instrument. Such a card has a transnational level, i.e. in most cases you can pay with it abroad.

Particular points using the example of one bank

These were general advantages. But to retain clientele, any bank will strive to introduce additional advantages. Or at least convince clients that these product characteristics are an absolute plus for the borrower. Here are a couple of additional advantages of a credit card using Sberbank as an example:

  1. The widest range of credit cards of all classes and levels: from a modest economy option for untested newbie clients to cards like Gold or Platinum with a large cash limit, low interest rate, a bunch of bonus programs and other special offers. The meaning is this financial policy is simple - the wider the supply, the higher the potential demand, since the coverage of a diverse clientele increases (from youth to retirees). Although this is far from the only factor influencing credit demand.
  2. Any. That is, when the borrower makes the first spending of funds from the card or when the card is considered activated (these functional details are specified in the agreement), then no interest is charged for the next 50 days. The borrower will have to repay exactly as much as he spent, and not a ruble more.
  3. The Sberbank card product also has advantages regarding credit overpayments. This is what the specialists of this establishment say when they tell clients about fixed interest rates. At Sberbank, annual interest rates on credit cards range from 25.9% to 33.9%. There are also special VIP offers for selected clientele with a rate of 18%. However, newbie clients should hardly expect less than 30% per annum.
  4. The simplest credit card options can be issued quickly and with a minimum set of documents: passport, 2-NDFL certificate, employment history. And if there is salary card Sberbank - generally only a passport. But this is a plus, which on the other side is a minus. Because many inexperienced clients, without thinking, order credit “plastic” for themselves, and then turn into bank debtors.

The reverse side of a card loan

It was not for nothing that the article began as a warning. Too many Russians are disillusioned with the credit card system to ignore the problem. This is partly my own fault. banking system and government policies, partly by the borrowers themselves, who did not bother to acquire a minimum knowledge of economics and finance. Or they were too lazy to think. So, the disadvantages that the credit card, so desired by many, hides:

  1. The most important and indisputable disadvantage is, of course, the huge overpayment. Whatever one may say, in Russia interest rates on loans are incomparably higher than in Western countries. For example, with a limit on a card of 100 thousand rubles and 30% per annum, it turns out that in a year you will accumulate 30 thousand rubles in interest alone. And per month - 2,500 rubles. This does not include the annual maintenance fee for the product. average cost such service is equal to 1,000 rubles, but can reach several thousand. And almost always this amount must be paid at once. Add here substantial fines and penalties for the slightest delay in payment. And it turns out that a credit card is a very expensive pleasure. Therefore, it should be resorted to only in the most extreme cases. For example, for expensive urgent treatment. Or when you desperately need some kind of digital/household appliances. But does this really apply to hundreds of thousands of Russians who go to shopping centers with a credit card every day, and then don’t know how to pay the bank after such shopping?
  2. The above-mentioned grace period of 50 days has one “pitfall” - it is fixed by month. For example, if a client received “plastic” on the first day, then he will actually have 50 grace days until the 20th of the next month. But if the product was activated at the end of the month, then the benefit will be only about three weeks, i.e. also until the 20th of the next month. Therefore, advice: if you take out a credit card, then only at the beginning of the month.
  3. Banks are now pursuing a policy of replacing cash with electronic money. There are many reasons for this, and it is not worth listing them here. But the important thing is that for withdrawing money from a card at an ATM (transferring it into cash), a hefty commission is almost always charged, sometimes reaching up to 5%. Therefore, one more piece of advice: you should try to make payments by card, and only by card. In the name of saving your own money.

To urgently receive a credit card, you need to go through the online application procedure: fill out the form and wait 15 minutes - 2 hours until scoring system the bank will not give you a “sentence”. If the answer is positive, you can take with you a Russian passport and another document (foreign passport, license, military ID, card health insurance etc.) and go to the nearest bank branch for a preliminary interview. If you do this right away, you will have the card in your pocket on the day you submit your online application.

Which banks issue urgent credit cards?

Some financial institutions(Tinkoff, Home Credit) offer an even more simplified option (although sometimes it may not be so fast). To get a credit card quickly in these organizations, after submitting an online application, you will need to send a scan of your passport and another document to email jar. The card itself will be sent to you by courier or by mail (in the latter case, the delivery time depends solely on the post office employees).
  1. Tinkoff Credit Systems(The Platinum card can be received by mail and even for urgent issuance the bank does not impose any restrictions).
  2. Home Credit (here, again, plastic can be delivered by mail, and when paying with it in retail networks, you will be able to save significantly on bonus programs).
  3. Rosbank and Sovetsky Bank (offer the longest grace periods for cards - up to 62 days - if you manage to return the money within this period, the loan will be interest-free).
  4. Russian standard ( favorable rates, large limit and large selection of credit cards).
  5. Binbank (loyal conditions for issuing and minimum percentage refusals on customer requests).

We have to pay for everything in our lives, including urgency. The standard procedure for obtaining a credit card can take from 3 days to several weeks, and urgent plastic can be obtained in 1-2 days, but the one-time cost per issue can be 5-20% higher. In addition, before submitting an online loan application, it is important to compare the duration grace period for different credit cards, the cost of annual servicing and the rate.

Many financial institutions for urgent loans, including plastic ones, deliberately increase rates, lower the limit and introduce other restrictions. In principle, the reason is clear - it is protection from possible risks and unscrupulous borrowers. And so that the availability of urgent credit cards does not turn into unpleasant surprises for you in the future, be sure to listen to our recommendations on where and how to get a credit card quickly on the best terms.

In addition, the client can use bonus and savings programs, receive Cashback for purchases made, and participate in various promotions.

Pros of credit cards

When comparing several dozen cards of the same type issued by different Russian banks, we can come to the conclusion that the conditions for the client in each case are almost identical, with minor differences. Any offers a number of advantages and disadvantages for the client, some of which are explicitly stated in the user agreement.

1. Credit limit

The main advantage of any credit card compared to is the ability to access a credit limit. This is a certain size borrowed money, which the user can dispose of in accordance with the rules established by the bank.

Credit limit amount in this year can exceed 3,000,000 rubles, and getting a card with such a limit is much easier than a standard consumer loan for the same amount.

In the fight for a client, banks use a scheme for gradually increasing the credit limit: first, a certain amount is placed on the card, which periodically increases if the card holder uses the card properly. The primary credit limit is almost never final, so the holder always has an incentive to use the card more often and avoid any violations.

This year there is a tendency for a number of banks to increase the possible credit limit on their cards. Maximum amount The following banks offer loans on cards:

  1. Eastern Bank (Credit Platinum) – up to 3,000,000 rubles.
  2. Rosbank ( Premium card travel) – up to 2,000,000 rubles.
  3. Citibank (Citi Ultima) – up to 1,500,000 rubles.
  4. Russian Standard (The Platinum Card) – up to 1,500,000 rubles.
  5. Unicreditbank – (AvtoKarta Black Edition) – up to 1,200,000 rubles.

Almost everyone has cards with a possible limit of up to 1,000,000 rubles. Russian bank. U credit institutions There may be several of the top ten cards with such a limit at once. This trend points in favor of plastic cards, since several years ago the maximum possible limit on cards of the same banks hardly reached 500,000 rubles.

2. Alternative to a bank loan

Significant amounts of the credit limit give the card a number of advantages compared to a regular one. bank loan. A client can receive a card with a limit of 300,000 rubles much faster than a bank loan for the same amount. The average processing time for incoming applications for a credit card does not exceed several hours, while applications for consumer loans may take several days to review.

If you plan to make any purchase, then a credit card from any bank will be a significant alternative to a bank loan. The only discrepancy here may be in the terms of the loan and interest rates.

3. Grace period

Every credit card owner knows what a card grace period is. This is the period during which the user can manage credit funds free of charge, without paying interest to the bank. The duration of the grace period is assigned similarly to the credit limit - a maximum period is provided within which a certain number of days is set for each client.

The standard duration of the grace period is up to 55 days. In 2018, there are a number of proposals that provide for more long term grace period. If you do not take into account installment cards (which, in fact, are credit cards), the following banks offer the longest free periods:

  • Eastern Bank (Big interest-free) – up to 180 days.
  • UBRIR (With grace period) – up to 120 days.
  • Post Bank (Element 120) – up to 120 days.
  • Bank Union (My bonus) – up to 115 days.
  • Alfa-Bank (100 days card line) – up to 100 days.

By analogy with credit limit, the grace period may be increased at the discretion of the bank or at the request of the client. To do this, you must use the card without violations and fulfill your obligations to the credit institution on time.

4. Possibility of interest-free withdrawal of loan funds

This year, more and more banks are providing for a grace period in case of withdrawal of borrowed funds. According to standard offers and programs, transactions for withdrawing credit funds automatically suspend the grace period with the simultaneous start of calculating interest under the agreement.

In 2018, the number of proposals providing for the withdrawal of borrowed funds without suspending the grace period increased. This means that the holder can withdraw cash, make transfers and make any transactions using the credit limit completely free of charge.

If you restore the limit within deadline, then no interest will be charged - as much as the user has spent, he returns that much to the bank. Withdrawal of credit funds without accrual of interest, with a large credit limit, is available on the following cards:

  • Alfa-Bank (100 days Classic) – up to 300,000 rubles.
  • VTB (Multicard) – up to 1,000,000 rubles.
  • Asian-Pacific Bank (90 for free) - up to 300,000 rubles.
  • Moscow Credit Bank(Unified Gold) – up to 500,000 rubles.
  • Fora-Bank (Premium with a grace period) – up to 1,500,000 rubles.

This is part of the list because current offers more than several dozen. Banks may set restrictive limits on withdrawals of borrowed funds. But this circumstance does not fundamentally affect the popularity of the product.

In 2018, almost any credit card provides a number of additional options that the holder can use if desired. It's about about Cashback programs, points accumulation, partnership and discount systems.

Credit institutions are interested in increasing the popularity of their products. For example, Sberbank’s “Thank You” bonus program allows you to accumulate points at the rate of 1/200 (one thank you = 200 rubles). The accumulated “thank you” can be spent at any time within the affiliate network.

Disadvantages of credit cards

Flaws bank cards generally remained the same. To issue a card with a low annual interest, a large credit limit and good additional options, you will have to provide the bank with a whole package of documents, among which should be documentary confirmation received income. If providing documents is not possible for a particular applicant, then he will have to rely on receiving a card with less favorable or unfavorable lending conditions. This rule will remain in effect for many more years.

1. Interest rate

A significant disadvantage of any credit card is the annual percentage rate. Minimum bid is set at 13-16%, but only for separate category clients, and often using cards from little-known / unpromoted banks.

For cards from banks in the top ten, for non-privileged borrowers the rate is set at 22-29% and higher. This indicator cannot be compared with a bank loan, since consumer programs the rate is set at 11-19%, which is much more profitable.

2. Issue fee and annual maintenance

Most offers do not include card issue or annual maintenance fees. Applicants do not pay attention to the fact that starting from the second year of using the card, the bank charges an annual service fee. This means that there are no completely free credit cards yet. If there is no fee for issuance and maintenance, then the bank charges a fee for connected services.

Additional services are disabled at the client’s discretion, but after they are disabled, using the card will no longer be very convenient. For example, without the mobile banking service, it is quite difficult for users to track the movement of funds on their cards. This service is almost always paid.

3. Cash withdrawals and late fees

Extending the grace period to cash withdrawal transactions is an exception to the rule. This rule does not apply to most credit cards. Moreover, for withdrawing cash (borrowed) funds, even from its own ATM, the bank charges a fairly high commission: a percentage of the withdrawal amount + a fixed amount. The average rate is 2% + 150/200 rubles per transaction. The annual interest rate also comes into effect here.

Fines for late repayment of debt are charged in the amount of up to 0.5% for each day of delay, to which a fixed (one-time) fine for violation of the contract may be added. In case of prolonged failure to fulfill obligations, the card may be blocked by the bank for debit transactions.

: For each card you can note the pros and cons. A product has not yet been invented that meets all the needs of holders. Disadvantages (albeit insignificant) are present in any case. To avoid this becoming an unpleasant surprise, the client must carefully read the user agreement before issuing the card.
