Sberbank contactless card- this is the same bank card, which provides the opportunity to make payments through the terminal with one touch of the card to the terminal, on at the moment within the limit of 1000 rubles. For more expensive purchases, you must enter your card PIN. This technology is called Pay Pass and it is convenient and safe.

The contactless payment card is equipped with a special RFID antenna (radio antenna), with which payment is made. Through this antenna, information about the owner is read from the card and transmitted via a secure channel to the bank, where the transaction is already being carried out.

How to use a Sberbank contactless card

The card can be used at all updated POS terminals (usually they are marked with a wireless payment icon). They are now almost everywhere.

To pay for a purchase, simply bring your card to the terminal. There is no need to insert it into the receiver; the PIN code needs to be entered only in case of payment for an amount over 1000 rubles; in the case of a smaller amount, the PIN code is not required.

The contactless card payment process consists of three steps:

  • Bring the payment card close to the terminal or at a distance of 0.5 - 1 centimeter
  • Fix the card in this position for a couple of seconds
  • After a notification about successful payment appears on the terminal screen, the card can be removed

If the POS terminal of the previous generation does not support the card, then payment is made as with a regular card.

Sberbank contactless cards pros and cons

  • Convenience of payment. You don’t need to take the card out of your wallet and insert it into the terminal; you just need to touch it for a couple of seconds and the purchase is made. This saves a lot of time, especially while shopping.
  • Durability of the card. Since the card is not constantly inserted into the terminal's receiver, physical contact with the card is eliminated and this increases the service life of the card.
  • Payment security. The risk of money being stolen from the account by criminals is eliminated.

As for owners of retail outlets, some complain about the high cost of POS terminals that support contactless cards. As they say, all good things come at a price. In this case, you will have to pay for the convenience of customers.

Security of MasterCard Pay Pass contactless cards

It would be a good idea to think about the security of payments using contactless cards. Contactless payment technology has several degrees of protection.

  • The range of data transmission via NFC is only a few centimeters, so during the operation the reader must be placed close to the card, which is quite difficult to do unnoticed.
  • There is another level of protection - restriction maximum amount contactless transaction: 1000 rubles. The limit of 1000 rubles without a PIN is the recommendation of Visa and Mastercard in Russia. Payment to a large amount will be rejected or require additional confirmation (signature, PIN). If you try to sequentially withdraw several amounts below the threshold, the additional protection system is also triggered.
  • Next you need to overcome more serious protection based on cryptography. The reading terminal must have cryptographic keys obtained from the acquiring bank and the payment system. Such keys are issued exclusively under an agreement with the bank that issued the card.

All this provides comprehensive protection and security of operations.

What happens if I use a contactless Mastercard PayPass multiple times to a POS terminal?

The amount of payment for the purchase will be deducted, the payment will not go through a second time. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about making an erroneous repeated card payment.

PayPass technology allows the owner of a plastic card to pay for purchases contactlessly. You do not need to enter a PIN code, nor do you need to sign a receipt. The payment procedure in this way significantly saves time and protects the client’s account from erroneous payments and fraud. We will consider the features of PayPass technology and what it gives the client below.

The essence of technology

PayPass comes from the USA. Initially, contactless payment technology was used in fast food establishments, but after the largest banks in Canada and Japan joined the work, contactless payment terminals spread throughout the world. Today the technology is used in a number of largest countries and throughout Europe.

In Russia, PayPass has been used since 2008 and works only with MasterCard and Visa. The cards were issued by the Moscow Industrial Bank. The main users of this “plastic” were students, for whom the “plastic” replaced both a wallet and a student ID.

Today the technology is widespread in large cities, and cards are issued by Alfa-Bank, Russian Standard, Tinkoff Credit systems" and a number of other organizations. The use of “plastic” is especially convenient where you need to save time: in cafes and restaurants, airports, gas stations, etc.

On front side The tool with PayPass has a number of designations: MasterCardPayPass and VisaPayWave. This makes it easy to distinguish such “plastic” from other types. The technology is not a connected service and its use requires the issuance of a separate card equipped with a chip.

The question often arises: “How to use?” The essence of the technology is that a chip with an antenna is embedded in plastic. It allows you to pay for a purchase by presenting your card to the terminal, without entering a PIN code. The terminal reads the information and transfers money from the account.

Possible purchase amount is up to 1,000 rubles. If the amount is greater, you must enter a PIN code. This is a condition for protecting funds. In addition, the technology will not allow you to pay twice, which is why the chip is turned off after payment is made.

If your wallet contains several cards with similar chips, PayPass will respond to only one of them. For others, the procedure will be blocked. An employee of the issuing bank can explain why the blocking is being made. Often, after account transactions are accidentally stopped, no further payments are made.

"Drink Pass" can be used abroad. At the same time, American Express is added to the two designated systems (Visa and MasterCard). There is only one condition for making payments - the bank that issued the “plastic” must have a certificate for accepting contactless payment.

Institutions working with technology

“Plastic”, compatible with contactless payment technology, can be credit or debit. Tariffs are comparable to regular ones, and a list of institutions where you can obtain such a service is located on the PayPass system website. Let's present a list of banks:

  • Promsvyazbank: “PSB-Platinum”, All Inclusive, “Supercard”;
  • Alfa-Bank: debit and credit cards Aeroflot classic and gold level;
  • "Russian Standard" - offers only credit plastic;
  • Sberbank: classic credit and debit Visa and MasterCard, Aeroflot, Platinum cards and Black Edition.

It’s worth mentioning separately about the “NFC-bank card Russian Standard”. The tool is inserted into mobile phone and is a regular SIM card. Unlike other types, a mobile device is brought to the terminal.

To purchase plastic for contactless payment, you should contact financial institution, which produces such a tool. The registration procedure in each bank is established individually, and the tariffs for use are indicated in the tariff plan. There are instant issuance cards and personalized “plastic”.

The registration procedure is as follows:

  • choosing a bank and submitting an application in person or online;
  • signing an account servicing agreement;
  • Receipt instantly or in 2-3 weeks.

The card can be issued free of charge if it is classic “plastic”. If the card is of the “Gold” (or Gold) level, then you will have to pay 1,000 or more rubles for the issue. In addition, there is a need to pay for annual maintenance. It is paid for any “plastic”.

Where can you pay with PayPass?

To pay using technology, you need to make a card deposit. You can top up your account at any terminal of the relevant bank, as well as through the cash desk. After this, payments will be available at any institution that has certain equipment.

Payment for goods and services with a card with PayPass is possible only where terminals with similar functionality are installed. Most often, the system’s partners are large stores, restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations, subways and entertainment venues.

To clarify whether such payment is possible at a particular institution, you need to go to the system’s website, where information about all partners is located. In the search form you need to enter the city and category of the organization.

The technology has a number of advantages:

  • significant time savings;
  • a wide choice of payment items - using a phone, wallet, key fobs, etc.;
  • secure payments thanks to the Security Pay system.

Disadvantages include:

  • a small number of organizations working with PayPass on the Russian market;
  • the lack of prevalence of institutions with PayPass payment terminals;
  • frequent equipment failures.

Since PayPass is a testing technology, it is often impossible to solve a client’s problem urgently. Phone numbers are posted on the system website hotline. The number is also indicated on the back of the plastic.

Security and reliability of payments also raise big questions. Sellers claim that the funds are under the complete control of the client. Of course, the antenna located in the Pay Pass chip operates at a distance of 3-4 centimeters from the terminal, and the payment is made in 3-4 seconds. But when transferring money, you need to carefully follow the procedure, since today there are devices like Bluetooth that can easily connect to the payment and transfer money to another account. This procedure is simplified because you do not need to enter a PIN.

Contactless payment for purchases has already gained immense popularity in the world. For the CIS countries, it has not yet been mastered, but the speed of its spread is growing exponentially. The country's largest financial institutions have become leaders in offering new products. Sberbank contactless card – let’s look at how it works in more detail.

What is a Sberbank contactless card

Card with contactless payment technology – bank card, equipped with a special chip that stores information about the payment data of its owner. By appearance it is no different from standard plastic cards. On the front side there is the holder's name, number, expiration date, and on the back - the CVV code.

Using such a tool, you can make all the same transactions as with a regular one. There are no restrictions or limits for such payment instruments.

Using the built-in chip, you can make contactless payments by card for purchases, transfer funds to other bank clients, and pay for goods or services within the Russian Federation and abroad.

How contactless payment works

How do contactless bank cards with chips work? Inside such plastic there is a radio antenna (NFC), which sends a special signal when making transactions. This process eliminates the need for plastic owners to enter a PIN code to confirm payment.

The fundamental criterion for the possibility of carrying out such contactless payment transactions is the presence of a specialized POS terminal that can recognize the radio signal from the chip.

The payment procedure itself looks extremely simple: you need to attach the card to POS terminal, after which a sound signal is heard indicating the funds have been debited, and a receipt is printed. Actually, that's all. The only caveat is that if the purchase amount is more than 1 thousand rubles, you will still need to enter a PIN code.

If a specialized terminal is not installed at the point of sale, then you can pay with such a card according to the standard scheme.

To make a contactless payment, just tap your card on the terminal

To receive a card, you just need to visit Sberbank in person. An NFC card will be issued to the client after verification of his application, which must be accompanied by photocopies of the passport and additional documents if necessary. Average waiting time for release personalized card is up to 10 days, nameless cards of the Momentum category are issued immediately at the branch.

Additional features

To understand how to use a contactless VISA or MasterCard card, you need to understand in more detail the options that it is equipped with. Thanks to the built-in chip, you don't need to enter a PIN code or wait for a receipt to be printed to pay for purchases. You simply receive an SMS message on your phone confirming that the funds have been debited.

The contactless payment terminal communicates with the Sberbank server instantly, which significantly affects the speed of the transaction. And the absence of physical interaction with electronic devices reduces the risk of deformation or damage to plastic elements.

Paying with a touch of a card significantly reduces the risk of fraud, since the card is always in the hands of the owner of the plastic card. Criminals will not be able to use copying or photo devices to counterfeit or manipulate card data.

To pay contactlessly, a special terminal must be installed at the point of sale

Pros and cons of PayPass

The main advantage of contactless cards is their ease of use. To pay for goods and services, simply swipe your card over the reader scanner of the payment terminal. Is it true, When making a payment in the amount of more than 1 thousand rubles, you still need to enter a PIN code.

The absence of physical contact between the card and electronic devices and other people increases the security of its use. The risk of copying and fraudulent use of plastic data is reduced.

However, this is also a certain disadvantage of such cards. Fraudsters still find ways to bypass security systems. Recently, cases of the use of homemade devices that read NFC chip information have been recorded. At the same time, the theft of funds may often not be immediately noticeable to the plastic holder.

Not in all retail outlets Countries now have specialized terminals for contactless payment. They are quite expensive to install, so not all sellers can afford it. But, in their absence, the card can be used as a regular one.

The current limit of 1 thousand rubles may also cause some inconvenience. If the purchase amount exceeds this value, then confirmation of the transaction by entering a PIN code is required.

Theft of money from cards has always been a common type of fraud. But with the advent of contactless payment cards, it has become even easier for criminals to steal other people's funds. If the owner of contactless Visa cards PayWave or MasterCard PayPass, then you find yourself in a risk zone when your money can be withdrawn from your account very quickly and unnoticed.

Contactless cards: convenience of payments and increased risks

Banks offered their clients new cards equipped with contactless payment technology - Visa PayWave and MasterCard PayPass. The purpose of their issuance is to facilitate payments and reduce the time spent on financial transactions. These cards are different in that there is no need to swipe them through the terminal. You just need to bring them to the reader and the money will be written off. There is no need to even take the card out of your wallet. When paying for goods or services worth up to 1000 rubles, you do not need to enter a PIN code. You just need to present the card to the reader. Paying with them has become fast and convenient.

But it is precisely the fact that money can be debited from a card remotely using a special device and without the need to enter a PIN code or sign, which has made them easy prey for fraudsters. The Zecurion company estimates that in the first quarter of 2016 alone, about 1 million rubles were stolen from such cards.

How does theft happen?

To withdraw money from a contactless payment card, a fraudster just needs to purchase or make his own special reading device and approach the victim with it at a distance of up to 20 cm. Even at this distance, the device reads the data from the card.

Contactless cards are equipped with special RFID chips, and devices that allow you to obtain information from them are called RFID readers. The fraudster just needs to bring it as close to the card as possible. So that the victim does not notice anything, thefts usually occur in crowded places - public transport, market, crowd of spectators at a concert, etc. The criminal simply places the device near the person's pockets or bag without him noticing. There is no need to even bring it too close - 10-20 cm is enough. A few seconds, and all the data is in his hands.

The criminal either uses them to make payments through online stores that do not require entering a password or CVV code. However, there is a restriction for contactless card holders - the transaction amount should not exceed 1000 rubles, only in this case there is no need to enter security data. But there are no restrictions on the number of transactions, so the fraudster can carry out several of them until he has used all the available funds on the victim’s card.

Also, some criminals produce “white cards” on which a magnetic strip is applied with the victim’s card data. Then they withdraw money from an ATM.

Some statistics

According to Zecurion, a company engaged in information security, in 2015, more than 2 million rubles were stolen from contactless cards of Russian citizens. As the number of users of such cards increases, money thefts will correspondingly increase. Zecurion experts predict that at least 2.5 million rubles will be stolen in 2016; by 2017, this figure could reach 5 million rubles.

How to protect yourself

It is almost impossible for the owner of a contactless payment card to protect himself from a fraudster, since in the crowd in which the criminal operates, it is very difficult to notice him, especially considering the fact that he uses the reader secretly. Therefore, you can find out about the theft of money only after it has been written off from the card. But there are ways that help reduce the risk of theft of funds:

  1. The maximum amount that can be debited from the card without having to enter a PIN code is 1000 rubles. However, it is possible to write an application to the bank to reduce it. This will allow you to lose a smaller amount of money in case a thief manages to steal your card data.
  2. It is recommended that you enable SMS notification of any transactions made from the card. This will allow you to detect theft in time and block the card. Despite the fact that there is a limit of 1,000 rubles for conducting transactions with a contactless card, the fraudster can make several payments. By activating SMS notification, you will be able to find out about the theft of funds after the first transaction and prevent all the money from being written off from the card.
  3. Be careful and attentive in transport.

There are also wallets and cases on the market that claim to protect your card from being swiped, but no studies have been conducted on whether they can actually prevent theft or not. Therefore, there is no need to rush to buy them.
